ORANGE LINE
By Dawn Byrne
Someone painted an orange line up the
middle of Maple Street. That solid line keeps cars and trucks from crashing
into each other. It’s a very important line. Ryder peddles uphill over the cracked
and bumpy sidewalk to race with the line.
Trees with orange leaves along both
sides of Maple Street reach across and hug each other. They make a bright
tunnel. Ryder and the line zoom through it among free falling leaves. Everything
is orange!
Ryder brakes at the corner.
The line breaks too.
It jumps over Broad Street and speeds
into the misty white morning.
Ryder isn’t allowed to cross Broad
Street. So, she stays where everything is orange.
For now.
